We’ve been there: asking for something at work can be hard, whether it’s for something big like a raise, something small like a new responsibility, or even just permission to use your own vacation time!

Asking for a standing desk at work doesn’t need to be that way – here’s our guide to formulating your request and getting your boss to say yes to a standing desk.

Step 1: Know thy workplace

Generally, in the world of office work, you don’t get something unless you ask for it.

But if you’re like many people, you are cautious in what you ask for at work. You don’t want to rock the boat or tarnish a reputation you’ve worked hard to build. Some people, of course, just jump right in and ask for whatever they want – our hats are off to those people, but this guide is for the rest of us.

You’ve got a better chance of getting a standing desk at work if…

Workers at your office have been provided with ergonomic chairs, keyboards, wrist rests, etc.

Your workplace has a cultural focus on health and fitness initiatives

You’re a strong performer with some “capital” to spend

You’re at a company that wants to be known for employee satisfaction

You have a good rapport with your boss (or whoever will be making the decision)

Think twice before asking if…

Your workplace requires everyone to use the same kind of chair or equipment

You share your workstation with someone else or you’re in a hot-desking environment

Standing up will position you such that you’re awkwardly staring into someone else’s work area

Your workplace is organized in a way that makes it hard to see how a standing desk might fit in

You work reception or another public-facing position

Your boss is a tyrant or balked the last time you asked for something

Your boss has criticized your work performance in the past year

In some offices, getting a standing desk is a no-brainer: standing desks are standard issue and you either get one by default or you simply ask and receive. In ten years in tech, I’ve worked in exactly one of these offices. Everywhere else, I’ve had to build a case and ask.

Here’s a few ways to determine if it’s a good time to ask – and how successful you might be.

Does your company seem to have the funds?

You might think that a well-known, major company is more likely to hand out whatever equipment people ask for. In my experience, this is not necessarily a guarantee. My first standing desk came from a relatively unknown company. My next job was at a well-known entertainment company and they balked at the cost of everything, from snacks to second monitors to standing desks.

So, look for other signs that your company might be willing to put up the $200-$600 a standing desk typically costs – modern computer equipment that gets replaced quickly when broken, team outings, paid interns, subsidized health care, etc. (My stingy office didn’t pay for any of the aforementioned things.)

(I also worked for a tiny tech startup early in my career that barely heated the office during the wintertime, refused to buy software licenses, and made us bring in our own second monitors and mousepads. I didn’t dare ask for a standing desk there.)

How long has it been since you last asked for something?

If you just spent some “political capital” on something (changing teams, changing seats, etc.) then it might not be a great time to ask. Give it a few months and work hard so you’ll be ready when the time is right.

If you haven’t asked for anything in a while (or never have) then that’s a good sign that your request won’t raise eyebrows – good managers are always looking for ways to motivate and reward their employees.

Your company’s annual or semi-annual review season can be a good time to ask, too. If review season is approaching and you expect your review to include an opportunity to talk about your future at the company, that’s a good opening.

Asking for equipment to help you do your job better should be one of those things that goes over well with your manager or boss, so it helps to frame your request as “this will help me do my job better” instead of “I want to try this new thing”.

Is your office configuration strict?

If you’re crammed into a bullpen with two dozen other employees, asking for a standing desk might be a non-starter. Likewise, if your office is a sea of cubicles, hexagon-shaped pods or rows of shared tables, you might also face an uphill battle in trying to get a desk that’s different from everyone else’s.

Some offices are built out of modular furniture that might make it difficult to swap out one desk for a standing desk. If this describes your office, you might not be able to get a full-size standing desk, but you might succeed in asking for a converter.

If you work in a cubicle, you may be able to fit a standing desk into the cube – or your facilities manager might balk at the idea of having to take the cubicle half apart to get the desk into it.

Step 2: Do your research and build a case

First of all – remember, you work hard for the company, and you’re worth the extra investment!

Bring in some research! There’s plenty of studies (and anecdotes) in favor of the benefits of standing while working. They aren’t huge life-changing benefits, but they add up.

This recent study found that standing desks boost productivity by as much as 46% on average (link to study).

Australian company Ladoo found that standing desks increased collaboration among employees.

This study, conducted by randomly assigning standing desks to workers at a company in Atlanta, found myriad benefits to standing up – including increased productivity and energy levels

If you’ve tried a standing desk elsewhere and found it helpful for X or Y reasons, be sure to mention that! Your boss is more likely to say yes if it doesn’t sound like you’re experimenting on his/her dime.

Just be careful not to make it sound like you won’t be able to get by without a standing desk.

Also, if you’re thinking of bringing in a doctor’s note, just be aware that, generally speaking, a doctor can diagnose an ailment or limitation but they can’t order your workplace to accommodate it in a particular way. Here’s a worksheet (written for employers) that describes the ways an employer might respond to a doctor’s note.

Step 3: Know what desk you want

It’s best to come with 2-3 top choices at different price ranges. Consider both full-size adjustable standing desks and standing-desk converters. Also consider whether you’d like a standing-height chair. (See our Standing Desk Buyer’s Guide for our top picks this year.)

Don’t come in with a whole sheet of options, and don’t make your boss pick for you. Here’s a chance to demonstrate initiative and leadership – be decisive and do the legwork (on your own time) before you go to your boss with the request. And be ready for questions! You should be familiar with the major advantages and drawbacks of each desk you pick.

But, don’t get super attached to a particular desk – your office might already be considering adding some standing desks, or they might have to use what corporate dictates, or they might have a particular supplier they do business with. This is where it’ll be helpful to know what design of desk you’d like (ie: a converter vs. a full-size desk) rather than a specific make and model.

Step 4: Make your request – preferably in person

When you make your request, be humble (not demanding) and demonstrate that you’ve put plenty of thought into this. Don’t run into your boss’s office the day after you get the idea (see Step 3, the one about doing research and picking a few desk models yourself).

A good time for the conversation might be during a recurring monthly 1:1 or your annual review. Or, if those are too unpredictable (or nonexistent), look for a time when your boss seems to be in good spirits – a major project just shipped, nothing’s on fire right now, and you have some recent accomplishments under your belt.

Chances are, your boss will have to ask someone else – either their boss, or someone who manages the budget – so you’re effectively asking your boss to go to bat for you in a way that’s smaller than but similar to the way they might go to bat for you for a raise or promotion.

If you can, it’s best to ask in person. You’ll be able to read your boss’s receptiveness to the idea and abandon ship quickly if it looks like the conversation isn’t going the way you want it to.

Sample scripts

Thinking about the coming year, I’d like to ask if switching to a standing desk might be an option here at CompanyName?

This is a good opening because it implies you’re thinking about your future at the company. (Hopefully you’re a good performer and they’re hoping you stay a long time, too.)

Alternatively, you might go the health angle – a lot of companies are introducing opportunities for employees to earn rewards for healthy behavior. Presumably, companies implement these programs because they care about their workers and want to invest in their long-term health. Besides, healthier workers are less likely to call in sick.

I was thinking about our company’s health initiatives, like the program where employees get rewarded for things like quitting smoking. Do you think that standing desks might be an option for us?

Or, just keep it simple:

Hey Boss Name! I’ve read a lot about standing desks and I’d like to ask you if I might be able to have a standing desk here at CompanyName.

A few “don’ts”

Don’t demand a standing desk just because you see someone else in the office with one. They might have their own reasons (possibly confidential or medical in nature)

Don’t act on a whim – if you can, try standing at home first

Don’t be demanding – approach this request as something you and your boss will work on together

Don’t make it sound like you’re unfocused, uncollaborative or ineffective without a standing desk

Don’t have your doctor “prescribe” a particular workplace accommodation – doctors can only diagnose and document limitations

What if you don’t work there yet?

When you’re still interviewing or considering an offer is actually a great time to ask for a standing desk (and it’s how I secured a standing desk at a company that only had 3 standing desks to share amongst 50 workers).

If you’re still in the interviewing phase, remember, you’re interviewing them, too! You can ask all kinds of questions at this stage, especially questions that make you look like a thoughtful, engaged employee.

If you’re still in the early stages, here are a couple scripts you might consider:

I do have a question for you, actually – are standing desks common at CompanyName?

Or, if the place you’re interviewing seems to have a culture that focuses on wellness:

I’ve heard a lot about CompanyName’s culture, and I love your focus on employee wellness. Can you tell me if standing desks are an option for your employees?

Only you can decide if a “no” answer upfront is a dealbreaker or not. Some offices might be open to the idea once you’ve proven yourself, but if you accept the offer, you may have to accept that a standing desk may never be a possibility at this particular office.

Be prepared for a “no”

There can be many possible reasons why the answer is no, many of which are outside the hands of your boss.

It could be a union limitation, a budget constraint, or your workplace might insist on “ergonomic training” instead (potentially involving a tedious online training session and/or adjustments to your existing chair).

In the meantime, keep up the good work – you’ll want a good reference if/when you leave for greener pastures someday.

When standing desks entered the mainstream consciousness a decade or so ago, sitting was quickly derided as “the new smoking”. However, scientific support for these claims is flimsy at best. We know that too much sitting is bad, and we also know that standing desks aren’t a one-shot cure.

Too much sitting increases heart failure risk and disability risk, and shortens life expectancy, studies have found. But according to an analysis published Wednesday of 20 of the best studies done so far, there’s little evidence that workplace interventions like the sit-stand desk or even the flashier pedaling or treadmill desks will help you burn lots more calories, or prevent or reverse the harm of sitting for hours on end.

However, these “best studies” weren’t longitudinal – six months long at best – and few were even randomized. (You can read a longer analysis of the studies here on npr.org)

Standing while you work is something you should do because you want to. If you feel you focus better while standing, are encouraged to walk around more frequently, or interact with colleagues better when you’re eye-level with them, then there’s no reason not to switch to a standing desk. Just don’t expect a miracle. Switching to a standing desk is just one piece of a larger healthy-living puzzle.

It’s totally fine if you want to try a standing desk before you re-arrange your home office or spend some political capital at the office to get one. Here’s our short guide to getting started standing up, including some DIY standing desk ideas you can use as inspiration for constructing a standing desk out of common household (or workplace) objects. If it’s not for you – no big deal.

If you’re an office manager on a budget or just up against a spending limit, here are a few of our favorite budget picks.

On this page: some of the newest standing desks for 2018 and a few old favorites. We picked the best of the best for this ultimate standing desk buyer’s guide.

Best adjustable standing desks for 2020 (and beyond)

Hands down, our favorite kind of standing desk is the one where the whole desk gets lifted.

Most of these desks are 4′ or 5′ wide, a typical “full size” desk width. There’s room for multiple monitors, any kind of keyboard, a mouse with a full 8″ (or more) of space, papers, notebooks, and any accessories you might want to accent your space with.

Models with hand-cranks are generally easy to adjust (but you’ll be turning that crank for a few minutes to go from sitting to standing or vice versa). Models with a motorized lift tend to run about $150-$300 more. We think a motor is a “nice to have” but not an essential – and virtually every motorized desk has someone out there reporting that the motor broke too soon. Rather than lift and lower the entire desk any time you want to sit or stand, we think it’s better to leave the desk at a standing height that’s comfortable for you and invest in a standing-height chair. If you leave the desk at standing height, the lifting mechanism becomes something you only use once in a while.

These are full-size desks, so they’re about as much fun to move as an ordinary desk. The lack of wheels adds stability, but if you think you’ll need to scoot your standing desk around, you should consider a standing desk on wheels (which are totally a thing!).

Our picks prioritize the following features:

generous surface space

overall stability

a generous height range

no crossbars or shelves to get in the way of your feet

special use cases (like desks designed to fit into a corner)

MultiTable Height Adjustable Crank Standing Desk – best standing desk for most people

* A STANDING DESK GEEK FAVORITE *

We think the MultiTable adjustable crank standing desk is the best standing desk for 2020.

The table is spacious, the legs are strong and stable, setup is easy, and the desk comes in a variety of widths so you can choose the one that suits your space. Whether you’re outfitting a professional workspace or your home office, you can’t go wrong with this desk.

There are a lot of hand-crank desks on the market nowadays, but we think the MultiTable beats them with its taller max height (47.75″), its easy-to-hide (or remove) handle, and the range of sizes it’s offered in. If your office has need for a variety of desk sizes, you can still get them all to match by ordering MultiTables.

MultiTable makes a ton of different standing desks (including electric options) to suit a variety of needs, and they’ll even take your bulk or custom order if you reach out to them through their website.

Quick stats

Tallest height: 47.75″ (should suit people up to about 6’6″)

Shortest height: 27.5″ (typical sitting desk height is between 27″-29″)

Width at widest point: multiple widths between 3.5′ and 6′ wide

Depth: 29″

Colors: 5 choices, including a variety of wood looks

Made in the USA

Advantages

It’s a full-size desk! Even the smallest model, at 40″ wide, is larger than just about any riser or converter on the market. This desk can also hold up to 130 lbs, which is 70 less than the Ergo Elements desk but still leagues ahead of what desk risers can hold.

The handle slides almost completely under the table top and it can be removed when not in use and set aside. Depending how fast you can turn it, it’ll take about 30-60 seconds to raise/lower the desk.

The surface is 3/4″ thick thermally fused laminate top, but it’s available in solid black, solid white, and a variety of natural wood looks.

MultiTable finish options include three wood looks

Drawbacks

We think this desk is fantastic, but if there’s anything some users might not like it’s the laminate top (as opposed to real wood).

Ergo Elements Adjustable Standing Desk – another great choice with some nice extras

The 5-foot-wide Ergo Elements desk offers some nice extras, including a curved edge and cable organizer in the back.

The Ergo Elements is another excellent crank-adjustable standing desk. It’s stable, sturdy, and while it doesn’t reach quite as tall as the MultiTable (45″ vs. the MultiTable’s 47.75″ max height) it’s still a great desk that can accommodate a variety of heights. The curved front edge makes it a little easier to place a mouse at a comfortable, close position and the surface (available in 4′ and 5′ widths) is wide enough for most dual and triple monitor setups.

Quick stats

Tallest height: 45″ (should suit people up to about 6’3″)

Shortest height: 27″ (typical sitting desk height is between 27″-29″)

Width at widest point: 5′ (there’s also a 4′ wide version)

Depth: 29″

Colors: 3 choices

Advantages

It’s a full-size desk! At 5 feet wide, there’s easily room for two 27″ widescreen monitors and a laptop, or a mix of monitors/laptops. No matter how bulky your keyboard or wrist rests, they should fit. This desk can also hold up to 200 lbs, which puts it leagues ahead of any riser or converter we’ve seen.

The Ergo Elements desk is beautiful and the hand-crank is about as effortless as they come (you still have to twirl it for a minute or two to switch between standing and sitting heights). There’s a subtle, smooth curve along the front of the desk that encourages good posture and makes it a little easier to position a mouse closer to the user’s body.

Furthermore, the Ergo Elements desk a great choice for professional offices because it leaves the choice of whether to sit or stand up to the individual employee – no need for employees to request special equipment, no moving heavy risers around, and the height is adjustable to a precise level. And since it’s a full-size desk, any ergonomic keyboards, wrist rests, etc. your employees might need should fit. Many risers (the kind that sit on top of an existing desk) can only accommodate a standard keyboard or smaller, or they skimp on mouse space.

There’s a little cutout for cords! This is a nice touch for those who like an organized desk.

The US-based customer support is responsive and helpful. Ergo Elements is located in San Francisco and is available on weekdays.

Drawbacks

The top surface is a pressed particle wood (most surfaces in this price range are). Unfortunately, this means the corners are more likely to arrive crushed or damaged. Ergo seems to be good about sending new tops when this happens, but the whole process is wasteful and frustrating. If there was a manufacturer making actual wood surfaces in this price range we’d change our recommendation, but for now we seem to be stuck in a “pressed wood” world.

Users with limited mobility may have trouble turning a crank for a minute-plus, but here’s a bit of good news: they make a motorized version, too!

ApexDesk Elite Series 71″ electric height adjustable desk

For most users, we think motors are unnecessary. If the motor dies, you’ll be stuck with your desk in one position while you wait on a repair or replacement (and there’s never a good time for dealing with that). Even with a motorized desk, you still have to wait while the desk lifts/lowers. So, rather than lift/lower the whole desk every time you want to switch between standing and sitting, we think it’s much better to pull up a standing height chair. It’s far less disruptive to your work and quite natural to hop on/off the chair all day long.

But you know your needs better than we do – and if you need an electrically lifted standing desk, the ApexDesk is a solid choice.

Advantages

Save your presets! ApexDesk should play this feature up more, because it’s awesome. ApexDesk Elite allows you to save heights and return to them later with the press of a button.

Save your standing and sitting heights to memory so you don’t have to find that sweet spot every time you adjust the desk.

The ApexDesk is electrically lifted, so you don’t have to turn a crank.

The curve along the front of the desk lets you stand closer in to your work, which many users find more comfortable. The ApexDesk comes in six colors, including a few wood-tones (the surface itself is not wood, it’s a scratch-resistant laminate).

At 225 lbs, this desk has a high weight capacity compared to most desks we’ve reviewed. If you have heavy equipment, this might be the desk for you. Many desks hold as much as 100 lbs less than the ApexDesk.

Pre-installed cable grommets help keep your cables tidy.

Responsive customer service will send you a replacement tabletop if yours is damaged in shipping.

Drawbacks

The motor makes some noise when you adjust the desk. This is one of our biggest reasons for disliking motorized desks in general (we don’t like feeling self-conscious about adjusting our desk at work).

Lowest height is 29″ – and this is too high for some folks. Typical sitting desks are anywhere from 27-29″, with the higher end of that range being somewhat more rare. (As a tall person who likes to sit with my legs folded in my chair, I prefer a 29″ sitting desk – but plenty of people find 29″ just an inch or two too high.)

The surface can chip. Some reviewers report that the surface arrived chipped (on the bright side, ApexDesk will send you another one with 2-day shipping if you contact them).

The ApexDesk Elite Series is probably the priciest desk we’ve recommended. ApexDesk makes a more budget-friendly alternative called the ApexDesk Vortex, but the Vortex doesn’t allow you to save preset heights. We think if you’re getting an electric desk because you want to adjust it often, then you should invest in one that can save your presets.

Stand Up Desk Store has you covered.

Desks designed to go in corners is a newer trend (and a welcome one, for those of us who have done time in tiny cubicles). This one’s smaller than most hand-crank desks but hey, it fits in a corner!

Quick stats

Tallest height: 45.25″ (should suit people up to 6’4″)

Shortest height: 29.5″ (typical sitting desk height)

Width at widest point: 59″

Depth: 29″

Advantages

The built-in monitor shelf is 5.5″ above the work surface, which eliminates the need for a separate monitor stand for most users. The frame is steel and the desk is reasonably sturdy. This desk is on wheels, so it’s more portable than most standing height desks.

Drawbacks

It’s rather small compared to other lifted desks and it only holds one monitor, but that comes with the corner desk territory. The desk is on wheels, so it gets around more easily than many standing desks, but the desk is slightly more shaky as a result.

Best standing desk converters for 2018

These desk-like platforms sit on top of your existing desk. Add one to your workstation to elevate your keyboard, mouse, and monitors to a standing height.

Since this kind of desk is always in the “up” position you’ll need either a standing desk height chair or you’ll need to move all your equipment to a lower work surface. We highly recommend a tall chair for standing desks that don’t adjust, because there will be days where you’re fighting a cold or just not up to standing all day. The #1 reason we’ve seen people quit their standing desk entirely is because they had no way to adjust it or rest while using it. See our latest standing desk chair recommendations here.

Here are a few standing desk stand-outs in this budget-friendly category.

Readydesk 2 – an easy-to-assemble, customizable standing desk converter

* A STANDING DESK GEEK FAVORITE *

Finally, a standing desk converter that puts monitors up where they belong.

Here it is: the grandpappy of standing desk converters. It’s all downhill from here.

The Readydesk 2 dominates our collection of standing desk converters for 2020 for one simple reason: you can adjust the monitor and the keyboard heights independently. This is super important. First of all, it means this desk suits a wide range of heights (from about 5’3″ to about 6’3″, depending on how tall the desk you put it on is). Second, and possibly more importantly, it puts your monitor higher up, where it belongs.

The vast, vast majority of products in this category expect you to plop your monitor on the same surface you put your keyboard and for most people, that results in the monitors being too low. Wait, really? Yes, really – when we slouch in a chair we think it’s fine to place monitors on the same surface as our keyboards, but when we stand up, we usually have better posture and suddenly the monitor seems too low. Not a lot of people realize this so they buy standing desk platforms that put the monitor and keyboard on the same surface and then they end up having to elevate the monitor somehow (or live with a poor ergonomic setup).

And, if that’s not enough, the keyboard platform is wide enough and deep enough to hold an ergonomic keyboard. The keyboard platform is 31″ wide and 11.5″ deep. This is also something so many converters and risers fail at – the vast majority of them have dinky keyboard platforms that barely leave you enough room for your mouse. We think a mouse deserves a full 8″ of width (a typical mousepad is 8″ wide) to be comfortable, so unless you’re using a trackball or know you can get by with less, we think most people will be disappointed in anything less than 8″ of space for their mouse. The keyboard platform is also large enough to hold most laptops.

It’s butt simple to put together and it looks awesome. If you don’t need the up-down capability of a riser, this is the standing desk converter to get. It’s made in the USA!

Stand Up Desk Store Desktop Converter with Monitor Shelf

ALSO PRETTY GOOD

The monitor sits 4″ higher than the keyboard surface, which is great for average height people (about 5’8″ – 6′)

We’ve recommended the Stand Up Desk Store Converter before – it’s budget-friendly and the elevated monitor platform is generally better for ergonomics than putting the monitor and keyboard on the same surface.

Advantages

This is a rare “two platform” design that lifts your monitor(s) up higher than they would be if they shared the platform with your keyboard. When we sit, we tend to lean or slouch so we don’t notice (as much) the effects of placing a monitor on the same surface as the keyboard. When we stand, however, we tend to need our monitors lifted several additional inches. Whether 4″ of height difference is enough for you depends on how tall you are – most users in the 5’8″ – 6’1″ range should be happy with about 4″ of lift, but taller users may find their monitor too low.

This desk’s large surface can be anywhere between 11.5″ and 16.25″ tall (adjusted in 1″ increments) which should suit users between about 5’6″ and 6’4″ (depending on the height of the desk you place it on). The smaller monitor surface is elevated an additional 4″. At 32″ wide, this desk is just barely not wide enough for two 27″ widescreen monitors, but it is wide enough for a variety of smaller monitor size combinations.

The keyboard/mouse platform is huge at 32″ wide x 23.5″ deep. A lot of standing desk converters and risers are skimpy on keyboard space, but this one’s big enough to hold even the largest ergonomic keyboard while still giving you over 8″ of space for your mouse.

This converter is great for offices where you can’t swap out any of the existing equipment, home office buyers on a budget, and people with limited space.

Drawbacks

The top shelf is shallow at just 8.5″ deep. That’s not much larger than many monitor bases, so measure carefully before you buy. Also, this desk is not great for short people. Since the desk’s lowest setting is still 11.5″ tall, if you’re under about 5’7″ you may find that to be too tall when placed on a typical 29″ desk. One last drawback – the top shelf’s weight capacity is just 15 lbs, so unless your two monitors are very lightweight, so this is effectively a one-monitor desk.

This desk favors single-monitor setups and large keyboards. Measure your stuff before you make a purchase!

Miracle Desk standup desk – for when all you need is a keyboard platform

If your monitor(s) are mounted on arms and all you need is a standing desk converter for your keyboard and mouse, the Miracle Desk might be what you’re looking for.

Miracle Desk standup desk: it’s meant for a keyboard and mouse but some people cram a monitor onto it, too.

At 15″ deep some users are able to squeak by with a monitor and keyboard on this same platform, but we think this is poor ergonomics. When you’re standing, you don’t want your monitor and keyboard on the same surface because the monitor will almost certainly feel too low when the keyboard is at a comfortable height.

Advantages

We like this one over some similar competitor models because of its width: at 36″ wide, and 15″ deep you can probably squeeze a notebook or a cup of coffee up there, too.

And if for whatever reason you want to use it for monitors, The Miracle Desk should be able to hold two 27″ widescreen monitors side-by-side and an ordinary keyboard plus mouse, but not an ergonomic “split” keyboard, as most run too deep to fit on this surface when there are also monitors on it. (For example, my Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000 keyboard is 11″ deep, and my 27″ monitor’s base is 7.5″ deep, which exceeds the Miracle Desk’s 15″ of depth by a couple inches. Boo.)

If you offload your monitor(s) onto a desk-mounted monitor arm, though, then you’ll get the Miracle Desk’s entire 36″ wide x 15″ deep surface for your keyboard and then some, which is plenty of space for even a deep ergonomic keyboard (such as this wireless keyboard and mouse combo by Logitech), leaving space left for a normal-size mousepad and a notebook.

The Miracle Desk is 12″ tall, which works for most people between 5’6″ and 6′ or so. If you’re taller than that, there’s a tall version that adds 3″ of additional height (or check out the Mount-It! desk, which stands between 12″ and 17.75″ tall). They also make a folding version for both the default height and the tall height, and it comes in several finishes.

Drawbacks

It’s not height-adjustable, which we think is the biggest drawback of this particular keyboard lift. However, it’s large size is enough to make us look the other way – assuming the height it’s at works for you. It’s 12″ tall, so if you’re about 5’8″ (give or take a few inches, and taking into consideration the height of your keyboard) you might find it to be just right.

Don’t be fooled, this monitor is on an arm that’s mostly off-camera. This surface is for your keyboard. You can try to cram your entire setup onto it, but you’ll probably find your monitors are too low if you do that.

This desk favors setups that are wider (up to 36″) and shallower (no more than 15″ deep). Measure your stuff before you make a purchase!

Mount-It! Standing Desk Converter – an adjustable option with more depth

Like the Miracle Desk, the Mount-It! sits on top of your existing desk and stays set to the height you adjust it to (somewhere between 12″ minimum and 17.75″ maximum).

The Mount-It! desk converts your existing desk into a standing desk. At 32″ wide it’s large enough for monitors and keyboard – as long as your monitors aren’t too big.

Advantages

It’s 32″ wide x 22″ deep, so it’s 4″ narrower than the Miracle Desk (enough of a difference to rule out a dual 27″ monitor setup) but it’s 7″ deeper, enough to accommodate ergonomic keyboards that won’t fit on the Miracle Desk. The legs fold up underneath which makes it more portable than the similarly-priced Miracle Desk, and its adjustable legs give it the user the ability to fine-tune its height.

This desk converter can be 12″ tall at its shortest and 17.75″ tall at its tallest. If you put it on a 29″ tall desk, then it should suit tall users between 5’8″ and 6’1″ or so.

Drawbacks

Like all products in its category, your keyboard and your monitor will sit on the same surface. That’s fine on a sitting-height desk but some people find they naturally stand taller than they sit – and suddenly their monitors feel too low. We think this desk has a pretty narrow range of heights it’s good for: about 5’8″ – 6’1″, depending on the height of the desk it’s placed on. Any taller and you’ll be taller than the monitor (like the model they used for their product shot below).

The monitor is too short for their model, in our opinion. The Mount-It! Adjustable Tabletop is a wide enough for a mixed-screen setup, such as a large monitor and a smaller laptop, but plenty deep – most ergonomic keyboards should fit, even when sharing the platform with monitors.

This desk favors setups that are narrower (up to 32″) but deeper (up to 22″). Measure your stuff before you shop!

Best adjustable desk converters/risers

Adjustable desk risers (or adjustable desk converters) sit on top of your existing desk and easily alternate between a “sitting” position and a standing-height position. They’ve got assisted-lift mechanisms so lifting is generally easy and smooth, and they’re strong enough to hold multiple monitors and all of your accessories.

The main drawbacks to this design are:

the sheer weight of the unit itself (usually around 40-50 lbs)

lower weight capacities vs. a full-size standing desk

the loss of desk space under the monitor/keyboard lift apparatus

a general shortage of space on the lifted platforms – usually you get enough for your monitors, keyboard, and mouse and that’s it

some keyboard platforms are pretty dinky – ergonomic keyboards are a no-go on all but the largest models, and your mouse space might be limited

at sitting height, your keyboard and monitors might be an inch or two higher than they used to be

Still, we’ve identified a few favorites in this category. These risers all tend to be large, because we think you deserve a normal amount of space for your mouse (around 8″ of width) and enough space for two monitors.

FlexiSpot standing desk risers – a space-saving design in a variety of widths and depths

The 47″ FlexiSpot model is large enough for 2 (or possibly 3) monitors. Its keyboard tray is 34.6″ wide at its widest points, which is enough for a full-size keyboard with numpad and mouse on a standard size (8″ wide) mousepad.

If you don’t need quite so much monitor space or you’re working with a smaller desk, the FlexiSpot 35″ is still fairly wide (though not wide enough for two 27″ monitors by just a couple inches) without sacrificing any keyboard and mouse space. In fact, this keyboard platform is half an inch wider than the 47″ model’s.

Advantages

The FlexiSpot comes in a variety of sizes (including a corner-friendly model), but the most generously sized models are the 47″ wide model and the 35″ model (both of which have the same size keyboard tray). This is one of the few converters that can accommodate a split ergonomic keyboard.

Here’s the Flexispot with an ergonomic keyboard.
The FlexiSpot desk arrives mostly assembled, all you do is attach the keyboard tray and get the whole thing into position on your existing desk. You can also use it without the keyboard tray and place your keyboard on the top platform, if you prefer.

Lifting and lowering is easy: you don’t need a 47″ inch arm span, as there is just one lever (it’s on the right side). The lift action itself is performed by gas cylinders, rather than springs (like Varidesk models), which gives the FlexiSpot an overall easier lift.

Also, unlike some desk risers (such as the popular Varidesk models), the FlexiSpot models stay within their own footprint when lifted. This helps for stability and it helps cut down on how much space the riser requires. It has 12 levels of height, ranging between 5.9″ and 19.7″ tall, which should suit users up to at least 6’5″ tall.

Drawbacks

The usual adjustable desk riser drawbacks apply here, plus a few unique to the FlexiSpot. The keyboard tray has an inward curve to it, which cuts into precious keyboard real estate. Those of us with ergonomic keyboards have a hard time finding standing desk solutions (besides full-size standing desks) that can hold our gigantic keyboards, and every inch counts.

There’s a lot to pick from when it comes to desk risers. Our choices in this section stand out at one thing or another, whether that’s having enough room for an ergonomic keyboard or having a particularly small footprint.

Best standing desk accessories

There are two more things we think every standing desk needs to be truly enjoyable: a standing-height chair and an anti-fatigue floor mat.

Boss drafting stool – a high quality, budget-friendly standing desk chair

This mighty stool has been our go-to recommendation for years now. It’s nicely priced and it holds up well over time. The seat is firm and the back is supportive. It’s not so comfortable that you’ll forget to stand back up, and that’s the point – it’s just a place to take a load off your feet, not set up camp. The seat goes up to 34″, making it suitable for even tall users (we met one 6’4″ guy who seemed happy with his).

After a year or so of daily use the cushion started to sag a bit along the top edge of the seat, but it was a minor imperfection (more like the chair was “broken in” than anything else).

Lean, twist, stretch, move – that’s the whole idea behind the HAG Capisco active chair. You can even sit on it backwards! The arm rests are designed to stay out of the way until you’re ready to lean back and take a rest. While “perched” on this chair, you can rest your feet on the little footrests over each caster wheel. The chair is designed for use with standing desks, so it gets tall enough for most people.

This 30+ year old design is normally sold in bulk to facility managers looking to outfit an entire office, but Capisco chairs are starting to show up at retailers like Amazon.com.

There are tons of anti-fatigue mats on the market and we’ve seen it all: rolled corners, chunks torn out, thick layers of crumbs that seem to have become part of the mat, you name it. The Topo Mat is our new favorite, thanks to its ridges and bumps that are designed to encourage active standing (and little foot massages!). The mat itself is just the right mix of squishy and supportive.

Switching to a standing desk doesn’t mean you have to ditch your dual monitor setup! All you need is a desk or riser big enough to hold two (or more) screens. A surprising number of standing desk solutions, accessories, add-ons, etc., are designed for just one monitor (or just a laptop), so we did some searching and uncovered some excellent desks and risers meant for two monitors.

On this page: a guide to choosing the right standing desk solution for your dual-monitor setup.

Before you shop: figure out how much space you need

Since everyone’s got slightly different equipment, it helps to know exactly how much space yours needs. If you use an ergonomic keyboard, for example, you might be surprised to find it’s bigger than a lot of riser platforms. Or, you might realize your monitors will hang off some desks.

I measured how much space my monitors and keyboard need.

Measuring my desk revealed a few things:

My two 27″ monitors may look huge (together, they’re about 49″ across), but their combined “footprint” is only about 33″ – which would fit on a variety of standing desk options

My keyboard and mouse take up about 28″ together, which is useful to know when evaluating platform risers (those devices you place on top of your desk to lift the monitors and keyboard up to a standing height)

The right monitor is my primary screen, and my keyboard and mouse positions reflect that.

If you’ve got a dual monitor setup, be sure to consider the placement of the keyboard in relation to the monitors. Some monitor brackets, platforms, etc. place the keyboard dead center between two monitors, which might be uncomfortable since you’ll be smack dab in the center of the two monitors and have to turn your head slightly to use one or the other.

Now that you know how much space you need, let’s look at the options!

Deluxe solution: switch to an adjustable-height full-size standing desk

This is my favorite option! An adjustable-height full-size standing desk gives you everything: plenty of space for two (or more) monitors, fine-tune control over the exact height you stop it at, and the option to turn it back into a sitting desk if the need arises.

Adjustable-height standing desks come in two flavors: hand-crank and power-assisted.

We think a hand-crank model is sufficient for most users – instead of adjusting the desk up and down all day for breaks, just grab a standing desk height chair and use the crank to fine-tune the desk’s height as needed. They only take a minute or so of twirling the handle and are generally just as stable as motorized standing desks. If you have mobility limitations or know you’ll get a lot of use out of a motorized lift, though, there are plenty of good options to pick from.

Here are some great adjustable standing desks that are wide enough for two (or more!) monitors.

The Stand Up Desk Store’s 56″ wide adjustable standing desk has a steel frame and is wide enough for two 27″ wide screen monitors

More of our favorite standing desks for dual monitors:

Stand Up Desk Store’s 40″ mobile standing desk – This shelf-like desk is mobile and at 40″ wide, just big enough for two 27″ monitors

Stand Up Desk Store’s 56″ adjustable standing desk – Crank operated and wide enough for two monitors (and then some)

ApexDesk Elite Series 60″ desk – 60″ (5 feet) wide is just the right size for most people and will hold two 27″ widescreen monitors (or bigger)

ApexDesk Elite Series 71″ desk – 71″ is simply massive, so if you need to hold 3 or more monitors this desk has you covered. The Elite series has a motorized lift and lots of finishes to pick from (there’s also a smaller, 60″ version)

PROs: We think it’s hard to go wrong with this type of standing desk.

Lifting the entire desk is smart – you can use the extra space for notebooks, papers, etc. Some adjustable desks are reasonably priced and some are more of an investment, but they accommodate a wide range of equipment options and users. For instance, there’s plenty of space for an ergonomic keyboard (something that’s often lacking on standing desk converters) and if you ever need to swap or upgrade your monitor(s), you won’t have to mess around with brackets or clamps. If you’re shopping for an office or a variety of users, this kind of desk will suit a variety of heights.

CONs: Adjustable desks tend to be the priciest option, but you can save some cash by choosing a hand-crank model.

Inexpensive DIY alternative: lift a normal-size desk to standing height

If an adjustable desk isn’t in your budget you might be looking for a DIY solution. There are tons of ways to build a standing desk, but one of our favorite (and simplest) designs is as simple as setting a normal-height desk on a set of bed risers.

Found this standing-desk-on-bed-risers in the wild at CodeFellows in Seattle, WA. The desk itself is an older IKEA model.

I’ve seen this done successfully with minimalist desk designs, like this IKEA desk sitting on a set of four bed risers, and I’ve done it myself for a couple of my own workstations. The best desks for this are lightweight and have four (or more) legs small enough to fit into the bed risers (most IKEA legs fit).

The Simplify 2998 Adjustable Bed Raisers can be used to add 8″ of height to a desk with legs narrow enough to fit into the space on top (IKEA legs fit).

Another interesting option is this powered set of bed risers by Mainstay. One of the risers is powered, with two outlets and two USB ports.

This set of bed risers includes one powered “riser” with outlets for powering or charging your phone, laptop, etc.

PROs: I like lifting the entire desk – and that’s the approach I’ve personally taken in both my office and home standing desk setups. I tend to write and refer to a notebook throughout the day and I like my water bottle and desk toys at standing height. Resting your entire desk on bed risers is an affordable “hack”, assuming your current desk is suitable.

CONs: This approach only works if your current desk has small legs that can fit into the bed risers, and, depending on the starting height of your desk, the 8 or so inches they add might not be enough for some taller users.

As a point of reference, I’m 5’8″ tall. My desk is 30″ tall by default. Adding 8″ brings it to 38″, which is a comfortable height for a standing desk for me when I’m not wearing shoes. Your mileage may vary!

The pesky issue of monitor heights

Even if you raise your entire desk you’ll probably have to add additional height to your monitors, too.

When we sit (or slouch) at a desk we tend to be low in relation to the desktop surface. Even if you lift the entire desk to a good standing height, the same monitor height often becomes too low. I personally like my monitors face-height, which is easy to achieve while sitting but harder to achieve at a standing height.

One solution: put your monitors on a stand

I’ve seen some clever solutions to this problem: standing-desks with monitors sitting on stacks of printer paper, cardboard boxes, books, old hardware, etc.

You’ve probably seen it (or done it).

If you don’t need a huge boost, this stand by HUANUO adds 4″ of additional height.

Office treasure: this simple monitor stand was in high demand at one place I worked.

I like the compact design – at 14″ wide it’s not much larger than the base of a typical flat screen monitor and if you’re doing a dual monitor setup they probably won’t encroach on each other unless your monitors are particularly small.

However, it’s not a great stand if you need more than 4″, like a lot of tall people do. Here are a few more options to consider:

The Allsop Metal Art Ergo 3 Adjustable Monitor Stand is our choice for people who need an additional 6, 7, or 8″ of monitor height.

Allsop Metal Art Ergo 3 stand is our recommendation for taller people, as it reaches heights of 6″, 7″, or 8″

Stand Steady Titan Stand adds a whopping 19″ of height, but it’s 31″ so if you have big monitors they might not fit (my two 27″ monitors are too wide by 2″)

Another solution: mount your monitors using a bracket designed for the purpose

Many monitor brackets add considerable height without sacrificing stability. They make it a little harder to mix and match equipment and tend to work best when you have two identical (or at least similarly sized) monitors.

VIVO makes extra-tall monitor mounts that can sit on your desk or clamp onto the edge while offering plenty of ways to position and tilt your monitors.

If you want a stand that just sits on top of your desk, the VIVO Dual LCD Monitor Free-Standing Desk Mount is a good choice. It’s designed to hold two monitors side-by-side, in portrait or landscape mode, and since it’s free-standing you don’t have to drill into your desk or make space for a clamp (though you can if you want to with the optional 4″ grommet).

VIVO makes a huge variety of monitor stands and clamps, and they all offer a large range of customization options. The VIVO Dual LCD Free-Standing Desk Mount sits on top of your desk, which is suitable for two monitors up to 27″.

We love this stand’s ability to tilt, swivel, rotate, and adjust the heights of the monitors. If you aren’t using the cable management system in the back, you can place your monitors very low (right above the desk) or quite high (the arm itself is 18″ tall but you can position the monitors anywhere along that height).

The VIVO free-standing stand without any monitors attached

For the added stability of a clamp, check out these options:

VIVO Single Monitor Mount with Arm – same as the above version but with an arm that brings your monitor(s) closer

The HUANUO dual-monitor mount clamps to your desk and lets you put two monitors (up to 27″ each) basically anywhere.

Standing desk converters for dual monitor setups

A standing desk converter is an apparatus you place on top of your desk and use to lift your keyboard and monitors up to a standing height. Other names (and useful search terms) for these devices are “platform” and “riser”. Your desk stays sitting-height (and you can lower the platform back to a sitting height). These lifts are suitable for workplaces that can’t offer a full-size standing desk and for people who benefit from the portability (when laid flat, they are easier to move to a new workstation than an entire desk). Most models are hydraulic assisted, so you’re not leaning over trying to lift all your stuff with just your own back and arms.

Finding a standing desk converter that can hold two monitors is a bit trickier – if your monitors are smaller you’ll have an easier time finding a suitable converter than if you have large, wide-screen monitors. Measure carefully – for my dual 27″ inch setup, some of these desks fall short by just an inch or two.

The VIVO Height Adjustable Standing Desk Sit-to-Stand Gas Spring Riser Converter (wow, that’s a long name!) is my top pick for this category thanks to its 36″ wide platform, which is wide enough for a pair of 27″ widescreen monitors, with one caveat: the keyboard platform is too shallow for some ergonomic keyboards, including my beloved Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard but not too shallow for my also-loved Kinesis FreeStyle 2 split keyboard. So it really comes down to what keyboard you like to use.

The VIVO Height Adjustable Standing Desk Converter is large enough for two 27″ widescreen monitors but the keyboard platform is too small for some ergonomic keyboards.

More standing desk converters large enough for two monitors:

VersaDesk 40″ Power Pro by VersaTables – motorized lift and 40″ wide, so there’s plenty of room for a dual monitor setup! Add a monitor mount to lift monitors even higher and free up space on the top surface (accommodates any mount compatible with 2″ grommet)

VersaDesk 48″ Power Pro by VersaTables – an even larger version of the above converter, almost guaranteed to fit whatever monitor and keyboard you throw at it

VARIDESK Height-Adjustable Standing Desk Pro 36 – this converter doesn’t have a separate keyboard platform so there’s plenty of space for large monitors and an ergonomic keyboard, but depending on your height, your monitors may feel low (or your keyboard high)

VARIDESK Height-Adjustable Standing Desk Pro Plus 36 – at 36″ wide you should be able to fit a pair of 27″ monitors on this sturdy standing desk, and the keyboard deck is 17″ deep and 19″ between the supports – it will just barely fit a large ergonomic keyboard, with room for a mouse on either left or right.

The Varidesk Height-Adjustable Standing Desk Pro Plus 36 is wide enough to hold two 27″ widescreen monitors and some ergonomic keyboards.

PROs: Converters are portable (at least, moreso than a full-size desk), sit on top of your existing desk, and they all include some kind of assisted lifting mechanism. Some designs allow you to mount monitors on an arm, which frees up space and might let you mount larger monitors than you would otherwise be able to sit on the platform.

CONs: Most of these standing desk converters don’t offer much (if any) extra space for a notepad or your beverage while you’re standing. Many desks have a keyboard platform that is just a little too narrow (or shallow) for an ergonomic keyboard (sometimes called a “split keyboard”).

And that’s it– the best standing desks and standing desk converters for dual monitor setups!

There’s chairs, and then there’s active chairs. What’s the difference?

A chair is any old arrangement of cushions and/or mesh, comfy enough to melt into for several hours at a time. Some standing-height chairs are exactly this: a chair, jacked up a couple feet.

Active chairs engage your muscles. You might be sitting, but you’re also supporting yourself with your own back and core. Active chairs usually take the form of a stool or saddle. Some active chairs let you tilt the chair itself, others are permanently upright.

Active chairs are sometimes called “perching” chairs. Perching is somewhere between sitting and standing, and many people with lower back problems find the perching position puts less strain on their back.

“Perching” is halfway between sitting and standing, with legs tucked underneath or extended in front of the body.

Active chair advantages

Engage more muscle groups when you sit – rather than rely on the chair to support your entire body, you do some of the work yourself

Easier to switch to standing

Shift, twist, wiggle, reach around – it’s easier to move while you sit

Burn more calories

Strengthen your back and core muscles while you sit

Active Chairs for Standing Desks Compared

The chairs in this article are a little different than your average standing desk height chair. Because they’re active chairs, they’re designed to make you do some of the work of supporting your body while you sit. Presumably you switched to a standing desk for any (or all) of the myriad benefits of doing so, but standing all day can be harmful in its own ways (and quite tiring).

The ideal setup is one where you can easily switch between sitting and standing throughout your work day.

That’s why we think every standing desk setup should include a tall, standing-desk height chair or stool. Rather than raise and lower your entire workstation when you need a break, we think it’s better to rest in a chair designed for the purpose. Keeping your desk at standing height is also good for encouraging you to switch back to standing – you’re more likely to go stand if you don’t have to first crank your desk back up.

Overall top pick: HÅG Capisco ergonomic office chair

Meet the HÅG Capisco. This eye-catching, unusual chair is designed to keep you moving throughout the day.

Above: the HAG Capisco Puls model.

The design may be nearly 30 years old, but this often-copied, never-duplicated design has stood the test of time.

You sit “on” the Capisco, rather than “in” it, and rather than letting you melt into the cushions for hours on end, the Capisco encourages you to twist, reach, and move. The Capisco is sometimes referred to as a perching chair, because you can perch on it, but you can also sit in it like a normal chair as well. That makes it unique among our recommended active chairs – the rest of the chairs in this article are stools, not chairs, but the Capisco can function as both.

There are many ways to sit on the Capisco (including backwards and sideways!) but no matter how you choose to sit, you’ll engage more muscles than you would in an ordinary chair. During typical use the Capisco functions more like a stool – your weight is held by the saddle and your feet, and less so by your butt and back.

The Capisco encourages movement and self-support, rather than slouching into a seat back or leaning onto an armrest.

The back of the Capisco isn’t mean to fully support your back all day – that’s what your core muscles are for. The armrests are out of the way until you lean back for a rest. The chair works with either a sitting-height desk or a standing-height desk. When fully extended for use with a standing-height desk, your feet rest on footrests sculpted into the chair’s own legs.

Every leg of the HAG Capisco is tipped with a comfortable footrest.

Three Capisco models to pick from

There are three variants on the HÅG Capisco design: the Capisco, the Capisco Puls, and the Capisco Puls Plus.

The Capisco is the original. It has the thickest padding and the widest pommel (the part of the sattle that goes between your legs). The Capisco Puls is a more affordable update on the design – it features less padding and a narrow pommel, allowing users to sit with their legs closer together. Finally, the Puls Plus is like the Puls, but with a fully padded seat. Think of it as a hybrid between the Capisco and the Capisco Puls.

How it feels

The seat and back are firm, regardless of which Capisco you choose. It’s the opposite of the “butt hammock” popularized by the Aeron chair. The seat is sculpted like a saddle, so if you find the undersides of your thighs dig or sink into the edges of traditional cylindrical stool chairs, you might enjoy the Capisco’s sculpting.

Just like adjusting to a standing desk in the first place, active chairs like the Capisco also have their own adjustment period where your back and butt get used to doing more work while you sit.

For one user’s in-depth review, check out “A Year with a HAG Capisco” on allartburns.org

HÅG Capisco pros

Designer look

Sit actively – encourages motion and movement

Makes you use your muscles throughout the day

Easy assembly – just four parts to put together

Works at normal height, too – not just for standing desks

Highly adjustable – seat height (x” – y”), height of chair back, backward tilt resistance, lock tilt resistance, seat pan can be adjusted forwards and backwards

10 year warranty

Good for more than just computer work – in particular, a lot of musicians seem to love this chair!

HÅG Capisco cons

HÅG only has showrooms in major cities so it might be hard to sit in one before you buy

Premium features come with a premium price tag

Might tempt you into sitting more than some of our other options

Best standing-height stool: Muvman Sit-Stand Stool

If the Capisco chair is a bit too much chair for you, you might consider a swivel stool instead. You can’t really slouch into a stool, and if your butt starts to get uncomfortable (which it will after a while), that’s your sign that it’s time to return to a standing position.

The Muvman Sit-Stand Stool is a deluxe, standing-height swivel stool.

The cushion is designed to pad your butt bones while you lean back for a standing break.

The Muvman is marketed as a perching stool, after the position it encourages your body to take while you use it. Some people call this position “sit-stand” (hence the stool’s name). There’s a handle on the back so you can carry this 14 lb stool with you wherever you go.

The Muvman stool encourages the user to “perch” – a blend of sitting and standing.

Muvman Sit-Stand Stool pros

360 degree tilt range for active sitting

Keeps you at standing height, so you remain eye-level with customers or your standing desk monitor

Support yourself with your hamstrings and buttocks – takes pressure off your back

20-33″ seat height range

The seat is angled 4 degrees forward, so it’s more like you’re leaning into it a bit rather than just sitting on it

Encourages movement throughout your day

Stable and strong – supports up to 265 lbs

Soft cushion and flexible seat edge to minimize pressure on legs

Non-slip, non-scratch base

Built-in handle for easy portability

This diagram from Muvman highlights our favorite feature of this stool: the cushion is flexible (yet supportive), so whether you take a traditional sitting position, or adjust its height so you’re somewhere between sitting and standing, the chair can lean (and the cushion can bend) to support your desired position.

The Muvman cushion is flexible and the seat’s design allows you to easily fine-tune your perching position.

Muvman Sit-Stand Stool cons

Requires an adjustment period to “perching” – possibly as long as several weeks

If there’s anything to beware of, it’s that a stool is really just that: a stool. It’s not a chair, and you’re not going to be able to let your body sink into it for a good hearty rest.

Best budget standing-height stool: Ongo Stand Ergonomic Office Stool

Some folks call the Ongo Stand ergonomic office stool a budget alternative to the Muvman, since its MRSP is nearly half the Muvman’s with few sacrifices. The Ongo Stand is marketed towards people who need to stand at work as a way to achieve “supported standing”.

With a height range of 11.5″ (24″ – 35.4″) the Ongo Stand is suitable for nearly everyone

Like the Muvman, the Ongo Stand is height adjustable and suitable for standing desks, and it swivels, making it great for active sitting. It features a soft cushion but, like any standing-height stool, isn’t really meant for relaxing and sitting still.

The Ongo Stand’s forward lean makes it so you don’t really “sit on” it, you just sort of “perch” on it.

Ongo Stand pros

Keeps you at standing height – stay eye-level with customers or your standing desk monitor

Support yourself with your hamstrings and buttocks – takes pressure off your back

24-35″ seat height range – about 2″ taller at the extremes than the Muvman

Microfiber fleece seat

Base design doesn’t interfere with your foot placement

11 lbs make the Ongo Stand easy to carry

Ongo Stand cons

The edges are designed to be soft, but users with larger thighs might notice them

There’s definitely an adjustment period to perching – possibly as long as several weeks

While the base’s legs are out of the way of your feet, the base’s legs may pose a trip hazard

No carry handle like the Muvman, so if you plan to move the stool frequently you might miss the handle

Where to buy Ongo Stand

Ongo Stand at officechairsusa.com – this retailer sells a variety of pad/frame color combinations and free shipping

Gaiam Adjustable Balance Ball Stool

Here’s a clever idea: take one of those inflatable yoga balls, cut it in half, and stick it on a standing-height stool! If you love sitting on a yoga ball, you might love the Gaiam adjustable balance ball stool!

It’s just like sitting on a yoga ball, minus the squeaky fart noises of your shoes rubbing against the lower hemisphere of the ball (not that I know anything about that phenomenon).

This balance-ball stool hybrid comes in a variety of heights and colors, so be careful which ones you choose – only the black and granite colors come in the full 33″ height you’ll (probably) need to make it work with a standing desk.

Gaiam adjustable ball seat pros

Casters for easy gliding

Lockable feet for preventing easy gliding

Circular foot rest for your feet

Challenge your core muscles while you sit

Anti-burst ball

Adjustable between 18″ and 33″ tall – so you can use it at a sitting or a standing desk

Pump included!

Gaiam adjustable ball seat cons

Rubber seat doesn’t give your butt any ventilation – you’ll want to switch it up regularly to get some airflow

The initial setup is a bit laborious, since you have to inflate the ball yourself

Sitting on a ball isn’t for everyone – this is one of those you either love it or you hate it things

Focal Upright Locus Seat with footrest platform

Our last active chair is the Locus Seat by Focal Upright. The Locus Seat is a leaning seat (it can still rock side to side and back to front) but what really makes it unique is the angled anti-fatigue platform.

The Locus Seat is designed to go under your standing desk and has space for both normal standing and leaning.

The platform is made of a mushy but supportive anti-fatigue material, so whether you’re standing or leaning, your feet are getting some much-needed support. The seat itself can be adjusted to suit heights from 4’11” all the way up to 6’8″ (max. seat height is about 45″) and weights up to 300 lbs.

Locus Seat pros

Stand with your body bent about 130 degrees which takes pressure off your spine and nearby muscles

Side-to-side and back-to-front movement reduces pressure points and keeps you moving without becoming a distraction

Engages your abs and core muscles

Suitable for a large range of heights – 4’11” to 6’10”

Sloped anti-fatigue footrest reduces stress on your feet

Seat post folds and there are wheels on the footrest – easy portability and storage

3 color options – black, red, and citrus

Locus Seat cons

The seat doesn’t work without the foot rest

Reduces under-desk storage space

The thing we love about the Locus Mobile seat is the way the seat moves and pivots with you. The overall feeling is that you’re not totally supporting your own weight, but you’re still standing and moving. The sloped footrest and seat work together to create a pleasant working experience.

The Locus Mobile seat in action!

Our IKEA SKARSTA rating

Once upon a decade ago, IKEA graced us with the (awesomely named) JERKER, a standing desk that has maintained a cult-like following despite being discontinued before YouTube was even a thing. The JERKER is still a hot commodity, with Facebook fan groups demanding its return and at least one blog maintained by a JERKER collector. I personally worked at a place (circa 2013) that still had three grungy, aging JERKERs, and some elaborate politics to determine who was worthy of one.

Needless to say, the world was ready for a new, affordably priced IKEA standing desk.

Introducing – the SKARSTA!

Okay, it’s not the JERKER, but there’s still quite a bit to love about this new standing desk from IKEA. And it’s not yet another “IKEA hack”, so put away your toolbox and drill.

IKEA SKARSTA Overview

The SKARSTA is an honest-to-goodness adjustable-height standing desk from IKEA.

Assembly is about what you’d expect from an IKEA product and the SKARSTA is (still!) one of the only adjustable, full-size standing desks available in its price range. The SKARSTA retails for about $240 USD, which is roughly half of what IKEA’s motorized BEKANT standing desk will run you. (Plus, the BEKANT has been dogged by complaints about its motor breaking for nearly as long as the BEKANT has existed.)

The height range is between 27½” and 47¼”. A lot of standing desks top out around 44″, so if you’re on the taller side, you might benefit from the extra few inches the SKARSTA affords you. (Find your standing desk height here.)

With a width of 47¼” and depth of 27½” (oddly enough, that’s also the height range) the surface area of the SKARSTA is on par with a full-size desk. If you don’t like the little “podium” style standing desks, or you want the entire desk at standing height, the SKARSTA is an affordable option.

SKARSTA video review

YouTuber David Zhang put together an excellent 5-minute review of the desk. He identifies a small problem with the top of the desk tilting towards the back due to the weight of his monitor and accessories (about 40 lbs total), and a bigger problem with the crank itself.

IKEA SKARSTA Review: Our Take

We think the SKARSTA is a great standing desk, especially if you have lightweight monitors (or just one, or just a laptop) and few accessories to load it down with.

There’s a lot to love about the SKARSTA: its clean and modern look, affordable price, hand-crank for precise adjustments, stable footing, and a generous amount of surface space (it’s as large as our sitting desks).

Gettin’ cranky

This adjustable desk – like most in its general price range – lifts and lowers with a hand crank. There’s no electric option (for that, check out the pricier BEKANT). If you plan to adjust the height of this desk several times a day, get ready for an arm workout. If you don’t relish the idea of working your biceps and forearms a few times a day, consider a standing desk height chair.

But here’s some good news: the crank can be mounted on the left or the right side, and when it’s not in use, you can push it under the desk for a nice clean look.

Some reviewers have pointed out that the crank’s shaft gets scratched over time.

The degradation of the crank over time is a little worrisome, but we (and many of our colleagues) tend to put a standing desk in a standing position and then leave it there. We don’t usually adjust between sitting and standing heights all day long; instead, we just a standing-desk height chair. If this is also you, you might also be less concerned about the crank’s durability.

We think the value of the crank is for getting a precise height, and adjusting as needed after a period of use. It’s all too common to build a standing desk to a particular height and then realize it’s a bit too tall or a bit too low – and with a non-adjustable desk, there isn’t always an easy fix. With the SKARSTA, you can fine-tune your height choice until you settle in a happy place.

Wobbliness and shaking

Some wobbliness is to be expected from virtually any standing desk that isn’t anchored to the wall in some way. If you’re judging shakiness by monitor shake, keep in mind that modern flat screen monitors are pretty lightweight and tend to shake even when placed on a stable, sitting-height desk.

The desk has a 110 lb weight limit, but that’s evenly distributed – they don’t mean you can stack a few 45 lb plates on one corner and expect it to hold up. 110 lbs is easily enough, however, to hold two flat screens.

Our rating

We give the SKARSTA 4 stars out of 5.

To earn a 5th star, we’d like to see more color/finish options and an improved crank – the model we saw at our local IKEA was missing the crank entirely.

The SKARSTA table top is particleboard and acrylic paint. A solid wood option would rock our world, like IKEA’s GERTON (which we love). IKEA has always been the land of mix and match desks, after all. Only the SKARSTA top is designed to go with the SKARSTA frame, but that’s not to say you can’t get clever – TopSetup magazine shares DIY steps for combinining a SKARSTA frame with a GERTON top.

The bottom line

The SKARSTA is a rare find: a full-size adjustable standing desk for about $240. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better desk at this price. Most of what’s available in this range is either just a frame or a lift, designed to lift only your keyboard and monitor instead of your entire desk.

If you spend your workdays stuffed into a dollhouse-sized work space, these narrow desk converters are for you. These standing desk converters have small footprints and sit on top of your existing desk (which should please your office manager ) and they look good in a professional work environment.

Best standing desk converter for small offices: the Ergotron WorkFit-S Dual with Worksurface+

Look at that tiny footprint! The Ergotron WorkFit-S Dual with Worksurface+ is narrow, with a small footprint, yet it can hold two monitors. It’s easy to switch between sitting and standing heights, and moving it to a new workstation is as easy as unclamping it (without any tools needed). The Worksurface+ has, well, an additonal work surface right below the monitor mounts for books, notepads, etc.

Pros: It’s height-adjustable, so you can use it sitting or standing and adjust its height with ease (no tools required). It clamps onto your current desk, so you can keep your existing furniture and move it to an entirely new location without having to reorganize your entire office layout. The dual monitor mounting system means you don’t have to sacrifice your dual monitor setup. Also great: the platform directly under the monitors can be used to hold things like coffee, notepads, and office toys.

Cons: The keyboard platform sticks out into your “sitting space”, so be sure you still have enough space to sit comfortably in your chair once the keyboard platform’s depth of about 8″ is accounted for. While the Ergotron itself is suitable for a small cubicle or work area, it does dominate the space you give it. You won’t be able to use the desk underneath it for anything.

Another great compact standing desk converter: Mount-It! Sit Stand Workstation

If you don’t have two monitors or just don’t want to (or can’t) mount your screens, check out the Mount-It! Sit Stand Workstation instead. Like the Ergotron, it’s got a small footprint and separate monitor and keyboard platforms, which will suit taller users.

Pros: Nice, hefty design that is easy to set up (no clamping, no tools needed) and move with you when you change teams or projects. The assisted lift mechanism helps you convert it between sitting and standing configurations in seconds and doesn’t require any tools. The keyboard platform is large enough for both a keyboard and a mouse, and there’s a cable management system in the back to keep things tidy.

Cons: The desk space underneath this thing is pretty much a loss: the platform is flat, so you can at least set your coffee on it, but it’s awkward for a notebook and only suitable for small objects. It’s only got enough space for one (huge) monitor.

Best budget-friendly small standing desk: The Original Stand Steady Standing Desk

It might lack the pizzazz of adjustable standing desk solutions, but the Stand Steady Standing Desk is a popular pick because it’s budget-friendly and takes up very little space. You can use the space underneath it, making it a great standing desk solution for small desks.

Pros: You can use the space underneath! I think that’s supposed to be a printer in the stock photo, but I could see this space being useful for laptop docks, phones, and notebooks. The Stand Steady’s biggest advantage over the competition is its low price – it’s considerably less expensive (to the tune of several hundred dollars) than most other space-saving standing desk converters. Like other standing desk “add ons” for small spaces, the Stand Steady is easy to take down and move to a new location in your office.

Cons: The Stand Steady doesn’t switch between sitting and standing modes like more expensive standing desk converters. To sit, you’ll either need a standing desk height chair or you’ll need to move your keyboard, mouse, and monitor every time you want to switch. (Or if you’ve got a laptop, keep it on the desk and use its keyboard and screen when you sit.) Since this desk is designed to suit small spaces, it’s not really wide enough for two monitors.

They make a wider version of the Stand Steady, though, so if you need two monitors and have the space to accommodate a 32″ wide table, check it out. Also, since the monitors just sit on the surface of the Stand Steady, taller users may find them too low for all-day use.

Best laptop-only standing desk converter: iCraze Adjustable Laptop Stand

The iCraze adjustable laptop stand is about as little as you can get when it comes to space-saving standing desk solutions. If you (or your employees) are primarily laptop-based, then this small laptop stand might be all that’s really needed to get standing.

Pros: Adjustable height, so you can use it sitting or standing! It’s vented, to help keep your laptop cool, and there’s even a little platform for your mouse. Despite its small size and thin frame, it can hold up to 30 lbs of laptop, so virtually all modern laptops can be adequately supported – even this 21″ 17 lb behemoth by Acer. (For comparison, a modern Macbook weighs just over 2 lbs.)

Cons: It’s just for laptops – no peripherals besides a mouse will fit. Tall users are likely going to find the monitor rather low and possibly uncomfortable for all-day use in the standing configuration.

There you have it: four great standing desk converters suitable for small desks, tiny tables, and compact offices.

Sometimes you need a desk that can go!

Many standing desks, from full-size (60″ wide) to micro come with wheels. In this review, we’re looking specifically at standing desks that come with lockable caster wheels on the bottom.

Why get a standing desk with wheels?

If you’re choosing a desk for a home office or cube farm, you might think you won’t get much use out of the wheels. However, having wheels can be useful for all those times when you need to add a new monitor, re-arrange desks, move to a new part of the office, etc. Since wheels don’t compromise stability (much), it’s worth considering the option.

Full-size standing desks are heavy – usually over 100 lbs once loaded. If you ever want to run some new cables or move the desk a few feet to the left, wheels make that a lot easier. Nearly all standing desks with wheels have a locking mechanism, and stability isn’t compromised.

Desks on wheels are much easier to move. Choosing a standing desk on wheels would be particularly useful for offices that tend to move workers around every so often. A desk on wheels is much easier to push down the hallway and might be the difference between moving your own desk and having to wait for the office maintenance crew to move it for you.

We didn’t notice any significant decreases in stability on desks with wheels vs. without, especially with ordinary office equipment (two flat panel monitors, keyboard, mouse, note pads, Nerf guns) on top.

We also didn’t notice any significant difference in costs. So, if you think there’s any chance you’ll want to move your desk’s physical location, consider a desk with wheels.

What to look for in a standing desk with wheels

Lockable wheels – this is a must, and every desk we considered for this review had lockable wheels

Sufficient surface space, not just for your keyboard and mouse but your notebook, water bottle, glasses, anything else you might put down and pick up throughout the day

Enough space for your feet to move around underneath the desk – we found some desks included a low-to-the-ground shelf that might seem handy for storage, but we also found it too easy to accidentally kick those shelves (and the things on them)

Overall sturdiness – weight and overall size contribute to sturdiness (the heavier the better), but nearly all desks feel more sturdy once loaded up with monitors and other equipment

A high enough max height for you – some desk names start with an inches number, like “60” stand up desk”, but in our experience that 60″ is often the width of the desk, not its max height. Look carefully.

Best electrically-adjustable, full-size standing desk with wheels

The best of the best, the cream of the crop – the Luxor Standup 48″ Height Adjustable Electric Standing Desk has everything you could want, including convenient electrically-assisted lifting/lowering so you don’t have to turn a crank for a minute straight. It comes in numerous color palettes, from all-dark to all-light, with some wood grain options, too. It’s 48″ wide, which is probably enough for most people, but if you’re like us and you live at your desk, you might love the extra foot of width on their 60″ version, the Luxor Standup 60″ Height Adjustable Electric Standing Desk.

This desk comes in many different color palettes, so be sure to check ’em all out and see which one matches your office’s decor best.

Why this desk is tops

Electrically powered height adjustment

Generous 47.25″ x 29.5″ surface area – and there’s a 60″ wide version for us ridiculous people

If you’d rather have a 47″ wide hand-crank desk over a 59″-wide hand crank desk for the same price, go with this one. Otherwise, keep reading for our (wider, deeper) top pick in the hand-crank category.

Yes, the stock photo for the Luxor Standup version looks exactly like the Luxor standup desk with the electric-assist lift. The only real difference is the hand crank on the right side.

In your searches for an electric-lift standing desk, you might come across the Stand Up Desk Store’s similar offering, the 60″ Electric Stand Up Desk. This is a fine desk, but we didn’t choose this desk as our top pick because at the time of this writing this desk does not ship with Prime, so you pay around $50 to ship this behemoth. You’d be better off buying a Prime membership, getting the Luxor, and enjoying the other benefits you get from Prime for the year.

Best mid-range / budget standing desk with wheels

Maybe you don’t need an adjustable standing desk at all. Adjustable sit/stand desks cost more than standing desks that are really only meant to be standing desks, and you might prefer using a standing-height chair instead.

In that case, check out the Mobile Ergonomic Stand up Desk Computer Workstation. It does exactly as it says on the tin: it’s mobile, it’s ergonomic, and you’re probably going to use it with a computer. It’s a split surface desk, though, so if you’d rather have one big tabletop, take that into consideration when choosing this desk.

It only does “standing” heights, but if you don’t need a desk that can be both a sitting desk and a standing desk (or you BYO tall chair) then you can pocket hundreds of dollars in savings by going with this desk instead.

Why it’s great

Separate keyboard and monitor surfaces reduce your need for a separate monitor stand

Adjust top shelf and bottom shelf heights independently for maximum ergonomic goodness

What you might not like

Bottom shelf is both convenient and easily kicked

No obvious place to put a PC tower; this is a good desk choice for laptop, Mac Mini, iMac users, but might pose some difficulties for traditional PC users who have to stretch cables all the way up to standing height

The minimalist design of Techni Mobili’s “laptop podium” has made it a popular choice for folks who need to save space. When we say laptop-size, we mean “a laptop is the only thing you’re going to fit on this desk”. There’s not even room for a mouse off to the side.

That makes this desk a good choice for short-term uses, such as presentations in a classroom or shared office space, or a convenient place to park your laptop while you work in the kitchen. It’s probably not a great place to spend every single work day.

It’s little but it’s got all sorts of uses, from the classroom, to the kitchen to office meeting rooms.

Why it’s great:

Super budget-friendly price

Height adjustable from 27″ – 43″

4 casters; 2 locking wheels

What you might not like:

It’s small

It’s a bit tipsy if you don’t weigh it down on the bottom shelf

Still, this desk has its place and it’s one of the best sellers among visitors to this site.

See the Techni Mobili laptop podium on Amazon.com

A few more things to know before you buy a standing desks on wheels

No obvious place to put a PC tower – Notice the stock photos make no mention of a PC tower with all the attendant cables. If you’ve got a wired keyboard and mouse, you might find their cords aren’t really long enough to reach a PC tower that sits on the floor. I’ve solved this problem in the past with a night-stand size piece of furniture or shelving underneath the desk, and you may have to get similarly creative.

All of these desks require some assembly from you – most can be put together in under an hour, but you’ll probably want a helper (or at least some moral support) when moving large pieces of furniture around.

There is a small but noticeable effect on stability with some desks. This seems to come down to weight – if you put a lot of heavy stuff on your wheeled standing desk, you’ll probably end up with something more stable than a non-wheeled desk that isn’t loaded down with stuff.

You may still need monitor stands. When standing, you may find you need to elevate your monitor even higher than they can go by default. The good news is, monitor arms have come down in price considerably in just the past few years. Some good choices here are the Mount-It! MI-705 and the 2-monitor supporting VIVO Dual LCD Monitor Desk Mount Stand.

The bottom line

We think standing desks with wheels are absolutely the way to go; they’re just as affordable as non-wheeled versions, there’s minimal sacrifice to stability, and the increased portability is a huge help every time it’s time to change offices at work or re-configure the home office.

An adjustable riser standing desk converts your existing desk into a standing desk. Standing while you work (even periodically) has many proven health benefits – improved cardiovascular health, energy and mental boosts, plus potential reductions to back pain.

If you can’t convince your boss to give you a fully-fledged standing desk, or you can’t squeeze one into your home office, these adjustable-height desks are the next best thing.

Today, we’re comparing two similar adjustable desks: the Stand Steady X-Elite Pro and Varidesk Pro 30. They’re both solid choices, but separated by about $100 in price and a few key features differentiate them.

How they work

Both of these desks are similar in price, size, and functionality.

They sit atop your existing desk and support your monitor(s) and keyboard, turning any ordinary desk into a standing desk. When you get tired of standing, switching it back to the lowered “seated” position takes just seconds.

Video demos!

This minute-long video from Stand Steady shows how easy it is to adjust the X-Elite Pro:

Max height and stopping points

Both desks go to about 15″ high (be warned, they get wobblier the higher you go).

The X-Elite Pro can be locked at any position between its flat position (5″) and its max height (15″), and the Varidesk has the same range and can be stopped at any of 11 set stopping points. The thing to think about here is how tall your existing desk is. Use our guide to find your ideal standing desk height, then use the heights of your existing desk and your adjustable riser to figure out if it’ll be a good height for you.

Load capacity

X-Elite Pro holds up to 20 lbs; Varidesk Pro holds up to 35. Most modern monitors weigh far less than 20 lbs, with a few exceptions from Apple:

27″ Apple iMac – 21 lbs, which puts it at the X-Elite Pro’s capacity but leaves weight to spare on the Varidesk

27″ Apple Thunderbolt – 23 lbs, which is still dicey on the X-Elite Pro and might result in some sagging over time

27″ Asus 27″ widescreen monitor – 11 lbs

21″ HP Pavilion widescreen monitor – 6.6lbs

Assembly

Both desks come completely assembled, just plop ’em on your desk.

They are, however, rather heavy – 30 or 40 lbs each. You may want a helper to help you place your adjustable desk onto your existing desk.

What fits?

Depending on the size of the monitors, you can cram as much as two monitors, a keyboard and mouse with a little room to spare. You can probably fit two 20″ monitors, but two 24″ wouldn’t fit unless one is rotated vertically. A laptop would fit easily, but you’ll want to prop it up on something and use a different keyboard for better ergonomics.

This Varidesk Pro 30 action shot from coachkate.com shows the Varidesk Pro 30 in use with a small flat panel monitor atop a ream of printer paper, a 20″ keyboard, and mouse.

Lift Assist

Both desks have a pump assist for lifting and dropping (like an office chair). Lifting the desk surface does require some mobility on your part – you’ll have to lean over it and squeeze the handles to lift or lower the desk.

Shakiness

The X-Elite Pro is a bit shakier compared to the Varidesk, which is heavier a little less shaky when typing. Both will shake more or less depending on how hard you type.

Other things to know

There’s not much room for anything else up there

Neither desk is wide enough to place anything (a notebook, stack of documents, etc) adjacent to a keyboard and mouse.

Not quite desk-level when flat

The X-Elite Pro sits about 5″ above the surface of your desk when lowered.

The Varidesk Pro 30 sit about 8″ higher than the surface of your desk when lowered (with a keyboard pullout tray).

You might need to raise your chair up a bit to compensate for this default height with either desk.

There is, however, a little trick you can do with the X-Elite Pro. You can remove the pin that prevents it from laying completely flat. The catch: the hydraulic lift assist only kicks in at 5″ and higher, so the first 5″ of lift will be unassisted if you do this.

Watch the drop

The Stand Steady X-Elite tends to drop – hard – when you lower it. Hold on tight for the last few inches. (Don’t worry about smashing your fingers, though, both the X-Elite and the Varidesk Pro have safety bars to prevent that.)

Pull out keyboard platform on the Varidesk Pro 30

The Varidesk Pro 30 has a nice slide-out keyboard support tray. This is nicer than the X-Elite Pro’s “all on one surface” design because it lets the rest of the Varidesk Pro desk act like a monitor stand, while your arms can rest comfortably lower than the monitor’s base.

Here’s the Varidesk Pro 30 in the lowered position. Note the pull-out keyboard tray in front!

Which one is better? Stand Steady X-Elite Pro vs. Varidesk Pro 30

The Varidesk Pro is our top pick between the two.

The X-Elite Pro is a fine choice, but we think this is one of those times where it pays to pay a little more. The Varidesk Pro is sturdier and larger, and the keyboard tray improves its ergonomics while using it seated.

Varidesk Pro 30 advantages over X-Elite Pro:

larger surface (6″ wider than X-Elite pro)

it lifts more smoothly

it can hold 15 lbs more than the X-Elite Pro (ideal for Thunderbolt and iMac users)

it’s more tolerant of hard typing (less shaky)

pull-out keyboard tray for seated position

The Varidesk Pro 30 won us over with better stability, a higher weight capacity, and ergonomic pullout keyboard tray.

We standing desk geeks are a bit odd: most people standing up for their job on a retail floor or a factory line wish they had more opportunities to sit, and here we are standing up at our desks by choice!

Why invest in an anti-fatigue mat for your standing desk?

Well, for one, they feel great. Standing all day can be hard on your feet, but standing all day on something squishy is pleasant and cuts down on some of the aches and pains, especially when you’re first getting started with standing at your desk.

In the United States, OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, recommends (but does not require) anti-fatigue mats for workers in a variety of standing jobs (and they think of everything). There’s good reason for that: anti-fatigue mats improve circulation and reduce strain and fatigue.

If you plan on standing all day, you should invest in an anti-fatigue mat. The right mat can improve your standing desk comfort, provided you also wear supportive shoes, change position frequently, and stand at your desk with good posture.

If you take one thing from this review, it’s that you should buy a real anti-fatigue mat, not a carpet square or a repurposed welcome mat from your local home decor shop. Don’t be fooled into thinking you can get away with an anti-fatigue “kitchen mat”, those are meant for 45 minutes of scrubbing dishes, not 6+ hours of standing at a workstation.

The mats in this review aren’t cheap, but they’re the right tool for the job. If you’re standing all day, you deserve a real anti-fatigue mat!

Deluxe anti-fatigue mat for standing desks: the Topo mat by ErgoDriven

26.25″ deep x 2.7″ tall (at the peaks) x 29″ wide

The Topo mat by Ergo Driven is taking the standing desk world by storm – and for good reason. It’s so much fun to stand on!

The manufacturer calls the nubs and edges “calculated terrain”. You can roll your feet against it all day and it’s like having a little foot massage while you work. Use the “center teardrop” to massage your arches and the calf raise platform to stretch your calves. “Active standing” is so much better for circulation and comfort than just standing still for long periods of time, and the Topo mat makes it easy and fun.

Another great feature? The Topo mat is large enough for the Bigfoots among us! Users with feet up to sizes 16 (US) are reporting that their feet can fit entirely on the flat part of the mat. The overall dimensions of the Topo are: 26.25″ deep x 2.7″ tall (at the peaks) x 29″ wide.

The mat comes in four colors and the manufacturer offers a whopping 7-year warranty. This mat is thick, firm yet yielding, supportive enough to use all day long, and durable enough to stand on while wearing shoes. Plus, we love rubbing our feet into the topological features.

The Topo is our top choice for standing desk anti-fatigue mats in 2018 and we think you’ll quickly see why!

See the Topo mat by Ergo Driven on Amazon.com

Deluxe flat anti-fatigue mat: Imprint CumulusPRO Commercial Grade Standing Mat

24″ deep x 36″ wide x 3/4″ thick

If you’d rather get a flat mat, then the Cadillac of standing desk mats is the Imprint CumulusPRO Commercial Grade standing mat. This heavy-duty mat by Imprint doesn’t mess around. It’s thicker (3/4″), heavier (6.5 lbs), and more durable than virtually any other standing mat on the market. The edges don’t curl and have a nice bevel to discourage tripping on the edges of the mat. Even Microsoft chooses ’em, according to the manufacturer.

Note: Imprint also offers the CumulusPRO Professional Grade mat, which comes in six colors, a few inches smaller on each dimension, and is slightly less rugged.

CumulusPRO mats are made of a non-toxic, tear-resistant, anti-microbial material and have a non-slip bottom that can be used on a hard floor or a thinly carpeted floor. The mat is easy to wash with soap and water. It’s not recommended to place a chair of any kind on a standing mat (hence why it’s a standing mat, you know?). It’s one of Amazon’s best sellers and the same mat recommended by The Wirecutter.

CumulusPRO commercial grade standing desk may be one of the pricier mats we checked out, but it’s a high performing, generously sized mat that will make your standing desk significantly more comfortable to use for hours on end. It comes in two color options: black and brown.

Much like mattress preference, how you feel about its firmness will come down to your own preferences. Some people say it’s too soft; others say it’s like standing on concrete. What gives? It’s hard to articulate the softness of something through text alone, but we think it’s just right. It feels firm at first, but after a day of standing on it, the heavier duty support is appreciated. Also, you can squish your toes into it, which is oddly satisfying.

Best budget standing desk mat: Imprint CumulusPRO Professional

20″ deep x 30″ wide x 3/4″ thick

(By “budget”, we mean around $50 or less)

Versus the CumulusPRO Commercial Grade mat, you lose 6″ of width and 4″ of depth with the CumulusPro “Professional” version, but you also spend about half as much money. The edge bevel is a bit smoother but the mat is just as thick and features the same cushion core technology.

You also get six colors to pick from! (Note that some colors have a slight texture to them which may or may not drive you batty.)

The complete mat, in all its beveled glory:

It looks like the CumulusPRO Commercial Grade mat with a different bevel, but there is more to it than that. This mat is slightly less supportive and has a different texture.

What are the tradeoffs versus the pricier commercial version? You’d be surprised: Imprint markets this mat to look like the only difference is the beveled edge, but there’s more to it than that.

Compared with the CumulusPRO Commercial Grade mat, the less expensive Professional version is slightly squishier (softer), has a different surface texture (some reviewers describe it as “oily” or “slippery”) and less supportive for long standing sessions.

I think if you’re only standing for part of the day, this mat is a fine choice. If you intend to stand all day, every day, the extra cost of the CumulusPRO Commercial Grade mat is worth it.

See the Imprint CumulusPRO Professional anti-fatigue mats on Amazon

If you need a wider standing desk mat: Sky Mat anti-fatigue mat (70″ wide!)

24″ deep x 70″ wide x 3/4″ thick

That’s just a few inches short of 6 feet wide! The extra-long Sky Mat mat is a beast: not quite 9 pounds but wide enough to stretch across even the biggest workstations and host a standing friend or two.

(Note that the Sky Mat comes in many colors when you get it at its smaller 24″ x 39″ x 3/4″ size, but the 70″ wide version only comes in black at this time.)

Up-close look at the Sky Mat reveals a weave texture and slightly rougher edges than the CumulusPRO mats.

The Sky Mat has a scaly “weave” texture which can collect small crumbs and particles, and since we tend to eat at our desks we favor the smooth Imprint CumulusPRO mats unless you specifically need a longer mat. Cleaning it is as easy as sweeping it or wiping it with a wet rag.

If your workstation is extra-wide or you frequently show your work to colleagues (who inevitably have to stand at your standing desk with you) you might prefer a wider mat. The Sky Mat features a non-slip backing that makes it a good choice for hard floors, but it can also be placed on carpet with no slippage or reduction in its anti-fatigue benefits.

Alternatively, check out the Smart Step Home Collection 72″ incher for your extra-long anti-fatigue mat needs. It’s a bit pricier than the Sky Mat but comes in more colors and is just as well reviewed. Prices vary (significantly, in some cases) by color, so be careful to check the price on the color you want.

Check out the Sky Mat collection on Amazon.com

Don’t buy this mat: Genuine Joe anti-fatigue mat

24″ deep x 36″ wide with various alternative sizes

Obviously, it lacks the thickness and support of the CumulusPRO Commercial Grade mat, but at about the cost of an entree at a nice restaurant, you’ve got to expect a few compromises. Those compromises are to not use this mat as a standing desk mat, even though it currently sits in Amazon’s #1 best seller slot for “Floor Comfort Mats”. Not everything in life makes sense.

The Genuine Joe anti-fatigue mat has an anti-skid back but the edges are a far cry from the anti-trip bevels seen on the mats recommended above. You can even see the edges curling up in the stock photo from the manufacturer!

It’s thin and flimsy, and you might find more use for it as, say, a mat for placing under your Rock Band drum kit to help prevent floor damage from the kick pedal.

This mat isn’t meant for a standing worker trying to avoid fatigue and physical strain.

How to use an anti-fatigue mat (plus some buyer’s tips)

Don’t be tempted to roll your chair onto it as you switch between sitting and standing throughout the day. Anti-fatigue mats aren’t designed to withstand chair wheels and sitting unevenly (half on the mat, half off it) negates any ergonomic benefits

Get a big one so you can move around on it – if you’re confined to a small space, you’ll miss out on the benefits of shifting your weight, stepping to the side occasionally, etc

An anti-fatigue mat can’t make up for poor posture – you’ll still be sore if you spend all day staring at a too-low monitor or using a keyboard that puts your shoulders at an awkward angle

Don’t get any old mat, especially if you plan to stand as much as possible at your standing desk. Look specifically for a mat designed for standing workers, not a kitchen mat or a rug that happens to feel kind of squishy. The difference might not be apparent at first, but over the hours (or days) you’d benefit more from a supportive mat designed for the job you’re giving it.

Standing up is great, but sooner or later, you’re going to want to sit for a bit. Ordinary office chairs won’t do: they can’t raise up high enough. Adjusting your desk’s height on a whim can be tedious, dangerous, or outright impossible.

What you need is a standing-height office chair! Here are our reviews for the best standing desk chairs, freshly updated for 2018.

If an active chair or stool is more your style, check out our Best Active Chairs and Stools for Standing Desks.

The Best Standing Desk Office Chairs

The chairs in this article are almost all chairs I’ve sat in and have some personal experience with. Here, I’ve ranked my favorite standing desk chairs and highlighted some of each chair’s best features.

Overall best standing office chair: Safco 3442GR Metro Extended Height Chair

The Safco Metro standing height chair is like an ordinary chair but taller. It’s got a cushion-y seat and back, and a ring to rest your feet on.

Pros: The Safco Products Metro chair gets the honor of being top pick because it’s the most chair-like standing height chair I’ve encountered. The cushion is 18″ wide and supportive – great for those of us who don’t care for sitting on a mesh chair. The chair’s back tilts if you lean on it for extra ergonomic comfort.

In general, this chair’s just got a good heavy duty feel to it. My corporate day job office gives these to workers with standing desks and they are quite popular. They aren’t great for sitting in all day long, though – most people prefer to have their feet flat on the floor if they intend to sit for hours on end. This is definitely a chair for people who stand for at least part of the day.

Cons: For this chair’s price tag I’d expect the arm rests to be included (arm rests are sold separately!) but I suppose it’s nice they are optional for those who think armrests just get in the way. Also, some reviewers report the foot rest ring slides down and has to be re-positioned occasionally. I’ve found this to be true of many other chairs I’ve used, so your mileage may vary. Some users find it tempting to let their legs and feet dangle free, but that can cause pain or numbness in the legs. It’s best to rest your legs on the ring when sitting in this kind of chair.

Height range: 22″ to about 31″ when sitting in it
Upholstery: 100% gray acrylic
Armrests: sold separately (click here)
Hardwood casters: sold separately (click here)
Black vinyl version: click here

Best “budget” standing office chair: Boss Caresssoft Drafting Stool

The Boss Caresssoft Drafting Stool‘s firm cushion and supportive back and <$100 price tag make this standing height chair a solid choice.

Pros: The Boss Caresssoft drafting stool has been my own at-home standing desk chair for a couple years now. After 2 years of daily use, the cushion has only started to sag a bit around the edges where my thighs hang over. It’s got a nice lift to it when I pull the handle and the chair has a good sturdy feel to it, even for sitters over 200 lbs. This chair goes higher than any other chair I’ve tried, so if you are particularly tall (over 6′) and/or your standing desk is particularly high up, this chair might be the one for you.

Cons: I wish it had arm rests. Also, to be completely frank, the 15″ diameter cushion isn’t that great to sit on for hours on end as my bum is about the same width. In a way, this is a good thing because the growing discomfort in my butt prompts me to go back to standing.

Height range: 28″ to about 35″ *tallest standing height chair*
Upholstery: “Caresoft Plush” (it’s soft and leather-like)

Best mesh standing office chair: Eurotech Apollo mesh back drafting stool

The Eurotech Apollo mesh back chair keeps your back cool and your arms supported with the included arm rests. (Note: I don’t know why the manufacturer calls this a drafting stool, it’s clearly a chair.)

Pros: Some people love mesh chairs. I’m not one of those people, but if you are, then the Eurotech Apollo might be the chair for you. It’s the priciest chair I tried, but it’s sturdy and well-reviewed by over a hundred happy Amazon customers. The 20″ wide seat is comfy and the widest of all the chairs I tried.

Cons: If the Eurotech’s price makes you cringe, check out the Safco Extended-Height Mesh chair (just know that armrests are sold separately and, once you’ve bought them, you’re almost up to the Eurotech’s price).

Height range: 26″ to about 33″
Upholstery: mesh back and black acrylic seat cushion

Best backless standing office chair (stool): Winsome Spectrum airlift swivel stool

The Winsome Spectrum airlift lacks a back (you win some, you lose some?), but it’s cheap and efficient for short sits.

Pros: It’s inexpensive and simple. The Winsome Spectrum stool features a 15″ x 15″ faux leather platform to rest your butt on. There’s no back, but that might be a good thing if your goal is to encourage good posture (I tend to just slouch into a chair back if given one). The pneumatic lift makes height adjustments a snap.

Cons: It’s best for shorter folks with lower standing desks (it falls about 3 to 5″ shorter than other chairs in this comparison). If you’re 5’8″ or under, this stool will probably work for you. Also, it’s not a very comfortable chair for long sits. If you need to sit for extended periods of time (or you want arm rests), this chair isn’t for you.

Height range: 24″ to 30″
Upholstery: faux leather

Best standing height stool with a back: Flash Furniture vinyl adjustable height stool

It comes in loads of colors (just look closely at the product page for each one – some of them are 2-packs!) and it’s pretty comfy to sit in. The Flash Furniture vinyl adjustable height stool is sturdy, durable, and comfy for longer sits thanks to the lower back support.

Pros: Inexpensive, simple, and it comes in a bunch of colors! The Flash Furniture vinyl stool adds height and a splash of color (or black, white, green, yellow, purple, and more if you’d rather not have it in orange) There’s also a two-pack of these chairs, if you want a matching set. This stool offers easy assembly (four screws) and a relatively light weight (22 lbs), despite the large base. Manufacturer says it’s good for folks up to 300 lbs.

Cons: As with many stools, be careful putting it onto a scratchable floor. Consider using a rug or something underneath if you’re worried about your hard floor. No arm rests and the foot rest is rather dinky.

Height range: 23″ to 31.5″
Upholstery: vinyl

Honorary mention: Wobble stool by Uncaged Ergonomics

It’s definitely not a chair – it’s a stool you can lean on! This thing is too weird to not include – have you used the Wobble Stool by Uncaged Ergonomics? Do you like it? I haven’t tried it, but I can see how it might appeal to people with very active desk lives.

The base is designed to let the sitter lean in any direction (and I have no idea what happens if you lean backwards so hold onto something if you try it). The Wobble Stool is designed to encourage movement even while sitting, and with a max height of 33″ you can even use it with your standing desk!

Best Tall Swivel Ergonomic Stability Perch Standing Desk Fabric" href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HCLJDSK/?tag=stdege-20" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-amazonimages=""><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" aligncenter" src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51VHaVfjL4L.jpg" alt="Wobble Stool Adjustable Height Active Sitting Balance Chair for Office Stand Up Desk.
If you’re not 100% sold on the idea of a standing chair (too sedentary!), then the Wobble Stool might be worth your consideration.

Height range: 22″ to 33″
Upholstery: faux leather

There we have it, folks – the best office chairs for a standing desk. These are the most “chair-like” of the standing-height chairs available on the market today. They have backs and armrests and could be mistaken for a normal chair at first glance. For something different, check out our reviews on active standing desk chairs.
